Reclamation & Closure
Reclamation and closure services are a key component of AEG’s business model; AEG is unique in the mine reclamation and closure business as we provide the full cycle of closure project services including technical closure studies, plan development, engineering, permitting, regulatory management, execution and long-term monitoring. AEG’s expertise in environmental and technical management additionally allows the Company to better manage risk in remediation and development projects, and thus provides a competitive advantage for property and business development opportunities that have traditionally fit Alexco’s business model.
AEG has prepared and developed reclamation and closure plans for numerous development and operating mines including open pit heap leach, large scale diamond, underground narrow vein, and brownfield industrial projects. AEG has demonstrated its business model of unlocking value in the field of mine reclamation and closure through innovative and value added services including marketing remaining assets, dismantling process plants, and construction and commissioning these facilities at other operations. We also provide care and maintenance and site management services for both operating sites and sites in temporary or permanent closure.
The Company’s senior management team has been recognized for its award-winning reclamation and closure performance at the Brewery Creek mine, which received the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Robert E. Leckie Award for Outstanding Reclamation Practices in both 1999 and 2002. In 2003, industry and government representatives praised the work completed at Brewery Creek for leadership and innovation in mine reclamation technology. AEG is unique in the mine reclamation and closure business as we provide the full cycle of closure project services including technical closure studies, plan development, permitting, regulatory management, execution and long-term monitoring.
AEG is currently contracted to develop, permit and execute the reclamation and closure plan for the historic environmental liabilities associated with more than 40 mines in the Keno Hill Silver District. Reclamation and closure of the Keno Hill historic liabilities represents a decades long project and includes numerous issues such as contaminated and flooded underground mine pools, waste rock dumps, open pits, tailings, physical hazards and contaminated groundwater.
